Canada's Bands Need a Museum

The idea for a museum representing Canada's banding history came about from
looking for a place to donate a substantial collection of photos and material on
Arthur Delamont and his Kitsilano Boys' Band, representing 24 years of work.
The collection has produced six books and thus preserved the accomplishments
and history of Arthur Delamont and his bands for future generations.

The first idea was to start a Delamont Museum but it always seemed alittle
restrictive regarding attracting attention and a large following. It was only in 2011
that the idea came about to start a band museum for Canadian Bands.

The opportunity is always available to donate memorabilia and collections to any
of Canada's  wonderful museums. The problem always is of course your
collection always gets put away in boxes or filed for a rainy day. It may be
displayed every so often depending on its significants and the exhibits planned
by that particular museum but there is no guarantee that it will be available for
you or anyone else to drop in and view it at any given time.

A museum dedicated strictly to those interested in seeing, preserving and
passing on Canada's wonderful band heritage to future generations would insure
that '
memorabilia donated would become memorabilia on display', which
we feel would be very popular and garner lots of attention and support from the
public and tourists alike.

As a “Band Hub” a new museum would:

• Be accessible, inclusive and welcoming to all, and  contribute to building a
healthy, diverse, and sustainable community with good music as a part.
• Offer dynamic programming by using our collections, exhibits, and programs as
catalysts to create dialogue, generate meaning, and connect community
members;
• Offer education programs that are central to all that the Museum does;
• Provide multipurpose space as well as indoor and outdoor gathering places for
community use; and,
• Seek input from visitors, colleagues and communities while working in
partnership with community members and organizations to exchange skills,
knowledge and resources.

Next Steps

We are currently gathering Community input  from across Canada to see if there
is strong support for a Museum  that would provide a place to share stories,
history, music and band memorabilia about Canada's Band heritage.

We are currently working and gathering potential partners  to identify new
opportunities regarding the museum’s location. We expect to present best
options to the community for feedback in early 2012.

We are currently accepting donations of memorabilia, including photos, uniforms,
instruments, posters, scrapbooks and anything band related that needs a
permanent home and to be rescued from the trash bin. Everything will be stored
in a  safe, heated storage space until the time that a physical location becomes a
reality.
