| Gwaii Haanas National Park Reserve and Haida Heritage Site |

| Welcome to Canada's Virtual North |
In the southern portion of the Haida Gwaii archipelago (Queen Charlotte Islands), 215 km southwest of Prince Rupert on Canada's west coast and 640 km north of Vancouver, is Gwaii Haanas National Park Reserve and Haida Heritage Site. It is a remote area accessible only by boat or chartered aircraft. Cooperatively managed by the Government of Canada and the Council of the Haida Nation, this roughly triangular wilderness area of 138 islands stretches 90 km from north to south. Gwaii Haanas offers a unique blend of natural and cultural features. To the west, mountains rise steeply. To the east, the coastline is dotted with inlets, bays and islands, while rain forest and upland bog, salmon streams, estuaries and kelp beds sustain a rich diversity of life. The relationship between the land, the sea, and the living culture of the Haida people is powerful and dynamic. |

The power struggle for the New World began in 1492 when Columbus first explored the Caribbean. For the next two centuries Spain would rule the seas and the Americas, becoming the most powerful nation in Europe. France,Holland, Denmark, and especially England, warred relentlessly with Spain for control of the Caribbean and the rich colonies of the New World.Spanish treasure fleets entered the Caribbean near Puerto Rico. One fleet went to Veracruz to pick up Mexican Silver and oriental silks, brocades and spices from the Phillipines. Silver from Potosi Equador was shipped up the Pacific Coast of South America and taken by mule train over the Isthmus of Panama to Portobello, where it was picked up by the second fleet. The second fleet made one more stop in Cartegena Columbia to pick up pearl, emeralds and gold from Nueva Granada. The fleets met in Havana before returning to Spain. |
